Tenerife lockdown Ludwigsburg to go top of Group B

LUDWIGSBURG (Basketball Champions League) - Iberostar Tenerife pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 83-62 road win over MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in a top of the table Group B clash on Tuesday evening.

Both teams now tied up their records at 7-2, with Tenerife claiming the top spot in the Group thanks to owning the head to head, having been responsible for both of Ludwigsburg's losses.

Kosatas Vasileiadas knocked down four 3-pointers to lead Tenerife with 17 points, Davin White and Mike Tobey added 13 each, whilst Mateusz Ponitka finished with 11.

"Congratulations to my team for the effort for 40 minutes," Vasileiadas said after the game.

"We talk about this game a lot. To play a great game and great defence until the last. We lost the last game in Champions League, so we came here to make a great game and play great defence and we won."

Thomas Walkup had 20 points to lead Ludwigsburg, Kerron Johnson had 12 and Johannes Thiemann joined them both in double figures with 10.

"Congratulations to Tenerife, they deserved to win," Ludwigsburg Head Coach John Patrick said.

"I think you can see that we had 26 rebounds, they had 36 rebounds, they had more assists, we didn't press until we were 20 points behind. We had a big win in the league and I think it went to some people's heads.

"We didn't show nearly the concentration we should have, just like the first game in Tenerife."

Defensively Tenerife were superb all game, holding Ludwigsburg to a season-low 62 points, and aside from the second quarter, also executed offensively very well.

Ponitka got Tenerife off to a hot start, scoring 10 points in the opening period as the visitors led 26-17 after one.

However, things considerably slowed in the second period. Neither team scored for the first five minutes of the quarter and Tenerife were unable to convert for the first six and a half minutes until a San Miguel three-pointer broke their drought.

Tenerife led by four heading into the second half, where Ludwigsburg would start the stronger of the two teams, pulling to within one just two minutes in after a Walkup 3. However, Tenerife would respond, culminating in a Vasileiada three with 40 seconds left in the quarter to provide a 12 point cushion.

A 9-2 start to final period, with two more triples from Vasileiadas put Tenerife up twenty, 67-47 and they never looked back for the remaining 8 minutes.
