Tenerife clamp down in second half to defeat Gaziantep

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA (Basketball Champions League)  Iberostar Tenerife clamped down in the second half to secure a 72-53 win over Gaziantep, who fell to their eighth straight loss in the Basketball Champions League.

The home side held the visitors to 19 points in the second half,  and just five in the fourth quarter, as they turned a 7 point lead after three quarters into a 19 point victory.

Tenerife remain atop of Group B with the win, at 8-2, as Gaziantep have the reverse record at 2-8.

Mike Tobey was the star of the show for Tenerife, going for a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double, adding 2 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks. Rosco Allen had 12, whilst Kostas Vasileiadas had 11 and Mateusz Ponitka joined in double figures with 10.

"I thought in the first half we didn't necessarily come out (how we wanted)," Tobey said.

"We were overthinking things and weren't really playing our game and that's why the first half didn't go as well for us. Second half I though we did a little bit of a better job. I still think we just got to keep going back to playing our game, but we did better job in the second half and were able to get the win."

A concern for Tenerife moving forward will be the loss of Nico Richotti who went down awkwardly whilst driving to the hoop and had to be carried away to the locker room.

For Gaziantep, Victor Rudd had 19 points, whilst Rolands Freimanis was the only other player in double figures with 12.

"More or less what I expected," Gaziantep Head Coach Nenad Markovic commented.

"Similar to a lot of games we've played until now. Always we play good first half, then third quarter we have problems and let the opponents team make easy baskets and make easy turnovers."

Ferran Bassas knocked down a three at the quarter buzzer to give Tenerife a 15-13 first period lead, as Tobey had 4 points and 4 rebounds in the first ten minutes.

Tenerife appeared to be gaining control in the second quarter, at one point extending their lead to 7 points before Gaziantep fought back, with Robert Carter scoring with 4 seconds remaining in the half to tie it up at 34 at the break.

Tenerife opened the second half on a 13-0 run to take a commanding lead before Rudd got going to keep Gaziantep hanging around, before their disastrous fourth quarter.
