Strasbourg retain perfect home record with Banvit victory

STRASBOURG (Basketball Champions League) - SIG Strasbourg kept their perfect home record with an 87-72 victory over Banvit on Tuesday evening.

The win moved Strasbourg to four for four at home, improving to 5-2 overall at the top of Group C, as Darion Atkins missed just two shots on his way to a game-high 23 points for the French side. Michael Dixon added 14, and Miro Bilan 12, along with a number of thunderous dunks.

"This was a really good team tonight and we didn't take them lightly," Atkins said of his opponents after the game.

"We felt like we needed to come out and win, and we got the job done.

"...I was just trying to play with confidence, and find my rhythm, play with energy. Coach told me to just stay aggressive and be confident and usually when I don't think about things too much and just play with energy, everything else falls into place."

Eighteen points and ten rebounds from Gasper Vidmar was not enough for Banvit, who struggled to deal with the speed and athleticism of the french side. Tony Taylor added 14 points and 3 assists.

"The Champions League is tough, it's tough for everyone," Banvit's Angel Caloiaro said after the game.

"We're halfway done now, there's a lot of games left so we've just got to continue to work and get better."

Louis Labeyrie got Strasbourg going early, as they took control of the game in the second quarter, securing a lead they would not give up the rest of the way.

Banvit got the better of the early exchanges in the second half, opening on an 11-4 run to pull within 3. However, a Zack Wright 3 followed by a huge poster dunk from Bilan that re-established Strasbourg's lead at 51-43 midway through the third.

The home side would take their biggest lead of the game at 11, in the dying minutes of the period before two late free throws from Banvit reduced the deficit back to single digits heading into the fourth.

When Wright left game with an injury just 90 seconds into the fourth, it was an opportunity for Banvit to take advantage, but instead Strasbourg displayed their superior depth. They extended their lead to as many as 19 points in the final period, keeping the game out of reach from the visitors and rolling to their third straight win.

Banvit dropped to 4-3 in third place in Group C with the defeat.
