Orelik saves the day for Umana Reyer in triple OT win over Banvit

VENEZIA (Basketball Champions League) - Gediminas Orelik turned from goat to hero for Umana Reyer Venezia on Tuesday night as the Italian club beat his former club, Banvit, after three overtimes.

The Lithuanian, who fouled Adonis Thomas from behind the arc with less than a second remaining in overtime and allowed the Banvit player to knot the contest at 91-91 with a four-point play and force a second extra period, ended up making the big shots in the third overtime as the Italian club won, 108-101.

Orelik hit a 3-pointer to snap a 95-95 tie early in the third overtime that put the hosts in front to stay. He hit another dagger from behind the arc to stretch Umana Reyer's lead to 105-99. Orelik ended up with a team-high 24 points.

Umana Reyer, despite leading by 18 points in the first half and having their noses in front for most of the game, almost didn't make it to the first overtime.

Banvit outplayed them in the fourth quarter and had a three-point lead with the final seconds ticking off the clock. Orelik passed to MarQuez Haynes, however, and he made a game-tying 3-pointer from the right wing and was fouled on the play. Haynes went to the charity stripe with a chance to seal the victory but missed the free-throw and the clash went to the first overtime.

Thomas' 4-point play then sent the game to the second overtime.

Banvit then looked to take control. They went ahead 95-91 with a basket from Damian Kulig and the Poland international was fouled on the play. He missed the free-throw, though, and Orelik soon after nailed one of his four 3-pointers on the night to trim the deficit to one.

Paul Biligha split a pair of free-throws to tie the contest and then Jake Odum missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer to send the game to yet another extra period.

Orelik and Umana Reyer made the plays they needed to make in the third and last overtime to claim a famous win on the opening night of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season.
