medi Bayreuth steal the game and tiebreaker at Estudiantes

TORREJON (Basketball Champions League) - medi Bayreuth fought back from thirteen down to pull out a 76-68 win over Movistar Estudiantes in Spain on Tuesday night.

The margin of victory also gave the German side the tiebreaker over Estudiantes in a hotly contested Group C.

It was a remarkable win for Bayreuth, considering they shot under 30% from free throw line, but a never say die attitude and 45% shooting from beyond the arc - including two huge threes in the final minute from James Robinson and Nate Linhart - saw them fight back in the second half to take the win.

"I think that was one of the keys," Bayreuth Head Coach Raoul Korner said. "Stopping the fast break and taking the speed out of their half court offence.

"And on the other end, I mean if you can shoot 30% from the free throw line, maybe we should have stepped out to the three-pointer because we were at least 45% from there.

"So that's a little strange but even better that we won the game."

Steve Wachalski led a solid team effort with 16 points, De'Mon Brooks had 14 and James Robinson 12 for the visitors.

"It was a very tough game," Brooks said. "Estudiantes are a very good team, with a deep roster and they're very well coached so we knew it was going to be a very hard game, with contributions needed from everybody tonight to pull out the win.

"Coach came with a great game plan and we were able to execute it down the stretch."

Estudiantes were led by 13 points from Sylven Landesburg, as he was joined in double figures by Goran Suton with 10.

It was Bayreuth who got the hot start, jumping out to a 7-0 lead before the home side woke up, responding with a 17-6 run of their own to finish the opening period.

A transition 3 from Brizuela tied it up at 11, before a steal and lay up from Suton gave Estudiantes their first lead of the game with 3:46 left in the period. Estudiantes led 20-13 after the first.

Midway through the second, a Brown three-pointer gave Estudiantes their first double-digit lead 32-22, before a big Arteaga block led to Cvetkovic 3 at other end for Estu, forcing a Bayreuth timeout with four minutes left in the half trailing thirteen; what would be their largest lead of the game.

The timeout worked; a 10-2 run followed to finish the half, culminating in a feed inside that found Marei wide open underneath to cut the margin to five at the halftime break, 39-34.

It was Bayreuth who responded in the third. A beautiful find of Marei from Linhart led to an easy two as the game was tied up at 48 with four minutes left in the period and then Bayreuth leading by 2, a 10-3 run at the end regained Estudiantes the 5 point cushion after 3, 58-53, after Arteaga drew a foul with 0.1 seconds remaining and knocked down both free throws.

Bayreuth tied the game up less than two minutes into the fourth after a Wachalski three, but wouldn't take the lead until a Robinson lay up with 3 minutes left. Robinson then followed with a huge three-pointer with under a minute remaining to give the visitors a five point cushion, with Linhart hitting another three with 22 seconds left to seal the victory.
