Gaziantep win with late heroics at PAOK

THESSALONIKI (Basketball Champions League) - Gaziantep came good in the fourth quarter and beat PAOK in Greece on Wednesday for their second victory at the start of the Basketball Champions League season.

Trailing by as many as nine points in the second half, the visitors from Turkey clawed their way back and prevailed, 85-82.

Excelling for the second straight week was Sean Armand, the guard who pulled all the right strings late for Gaziantep and finished with 20 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Armand did all of his scoring in the second half.

His late alley-oop pass on a backdoor cut by Victor Rudd was a thing of beauty. Rudd  dunked it and it was effectively the final nail in the coffin for PAOK, who dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Jure Balazic, also playing well for the second straight week, was instrumental for Gaziantep in their comeback. Down 59-52 late in the third quarter and beginning to fade, Gaziantep got the ball to the Slovenian and he drilled a 3-pointer.

PAOK maintained an edge, though, until late in the fourth quarter when again Balazic came to the fore. His basket made it 77-75 in favor of Gaziantep and they led for the rest of the way.

A key sequence happened inside the final minute after Lucky Jones had trimmed the Gaziantep advantage to 79-77.

Armand drove and scored and an unsportsmanlike foul was called on Jones. Armand made the free-throw and then with Gaziantep maintaining possession, he dribbled until just four seconds remained on the shot clock down made his alley-oop pass to Rudd for the dunk.

Armand led the way in scoring while D.J. White was also big, scoring 19 points. Rudd contributed 17 and Balazic 13. PAOK, beaten by MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg on Gameday 1, got a game-high 22 points off the bench from Brandon Triche.

PAOK will play at Capo D'Orlando next week in a battle of 0-2 teams while Gaziantep will host defending champions Iberostar Tenerife (1-1).
