Estudiantes ride hot start to get past Petrol Olimpija

LJUBLJANA (Basketball Champions League) - Movistar Estudiantes used a hot start to get a 72-57 win over Petrol Olimpija on Wednesday evening.

The visitors knocked down six triples in the opening period as they won their fourth game of the last five, improving to 7-4 in Group C. Riding their offence in the first half, Estudiantes clamped down defensively in the second.

Nik Caner-Medley led Estudiantes with 17 points and 9 rebounds, being the only player in double figures for the Spaniards, though every player on the roster saw minutes as the scoring was evenly distributed.

"They're a tough team," Caner-Medley said after the game.

"The last few games we've played well on the defensive end and the results have been positive because of this."

Olimpija fell to 4-7, as their chances of advancing were severely reduced with the defeat.

Jan Span had 11 points to lead the home side, and Battle joined him in double figures with 10.

"I think there's not much to say," Olimpija's Roko Badzim, who finished with 9 points, dismayed.

"They were a better team the whole game and deserved to win. We had our chances but we didn't take them; they deserved to win."

Sylven Landesburg had a quick 8 points as Estudiantes jumped out to a 15-7 lead five minutes in. Estudiantes were a blistering 6-of-12 from three in the opening quarter, to go up 26-17 after opening period.

The double digit cushion would remain there or thereabouts for the rest of the contest. Other than a 2-point lead from the opening basket of the game, Olimpija trailed throughout as Estudiantes led from start to finish.

The lead hit double digits early in the second period, with 7 players already registering on the scoresheet, as Estudiantes appeared firmly in control. Estudiantes led 34-25 at halftime.

A three-pointer from Talor Battle pulled Olimpija back to within seven, 45-52, with two minutes left in the third and it appeared they were getting back into it, but as they had done all game, Estudiantes responded, reeling off a 7-0 run to regain a cushion.

From there the visitors would cruise the rest of the way, leading by as many as 15 down the stretch.
