Bonn play spoiler to Avellino's Play-Offs hopes

BONN (Basketball Champions League) - Telekom Baskets Bonn ended any hopes Sidigas Avellino had of reaching the Round of 16 by securing a 79-74 victory on Wednesday evening.

Trailing by 8 with six minutes to play, Bonn went on an 11-0 run sparked by Tomislav Zubcic and finished the game on a 19-6 run overall to steal one from the visiting team.

Neither Avellino or Bonn will advance to the Play Offs, with Bonn already having been eliminated, and now playing spoiler to the Italian side. It was Zielona Gora who took the fourth spot in Group D, despite their loss to CEZ Nymburk.

Zubcic and Martin Breunig led Bonn with 17 points each, the latter adding 10 rebounds as they combined to miss just five shots between them. Josh Mayo added 11 points, while Konstantin Klein had 10 points and 4 assists.

For Avellino, Thomas Scrubb had 16 points and 7 rebounds, with Jason Rich and Bruno Fitipaldo adding 11-a-piece.

Neither team could find an edge in the early stages, with multiple lead changes throughout the entire contest. An Andrea Zerini lay up with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter brought Avellino to within two, as Bonn led 21-19 after one.

A similar theme followed in the second quarter; Fitipaldo knocked down a three to open the period and Avellino had the lead, before another three lead changes ensued in the next minute.

With Avellino holding a three point lead, a banked in running floater at the halftime buzzer from Bartolo brought Bonn back to within one, trailing 40-39 at halftime.

It would continue in the second half. Fitipaldo knocked down a three at the third quarter buzzer to tie the game at 57 heading into the fourth to set up a thrilling finish.

A 9-0 run punctuated by a baseline jumper from Jason Rich, gave Avellino a 68-60 lead heading into the final six minutes and it finally looked like someone had broken the game.

Just when it appeared Avellino were in control, Bonn would respond with their own aforementioned 11-0 run to ultimately pip Avellino to the post.

When Ndiaye missed a wide open dunk underneath, and Zubcic punished Avellino at the other end with a long two from the corner, it gave Bonn a three point lead and all the momentum to run out winners.
