Besiktas crush Oostende behind stellar defensive effort

OOSTENDE (Basketball Champions League) - Besiktas Sompo Japan made light work of the home side Oostende, with a 77-49 rout on Tuesday in Group D action.

Besiktas had little trouble, despite being on the road, jumping out to an early lead, pulling away for good in the second period and controlling the game on the defensive end to hold Oostende to under fifty points.

A 13-0 run to open the second period saw Besiktas' lead baloon to 22, as things would go from bad to worse for the home side as they would see themselves down as many as 34.

Jon Diebler led Bestikas with 14, Augusto Lima had 11, and Ryan Boatright joined them in double figures with 10.

"It was important to win away game," Head Coach Ufuk Sarica commented.

"They are a good team...they are in good shape, but we played excellent tonight, especially in the beginning of the game. All game, we were really strong on defence, on offence we played together and shared the ball. I'm sure we will be better in time."

No player reached double digits for Oostende, with Tonye Jekiri, Chase Fieler and Jean Salumu all registering 8 points-a-piece.

"They have a lot of quality," a disappointed Salumu said after the game.

"We knew that, we tried to prepare for that but as a team we didn't react well. We didn't match their energy as a team, we stayed in the same slumber and we couldn't wake up for one moment. It's frustrating for us."
