Tenerife bring back English, Dawson returns to Rishon
(Basketball Champions League) – Sharp-shooter Carl English has joined Group D contenders Iberostar Tenerife for a second spell at the club while all-round winger Shawn Dawson has returned to Group B participants Maccabi Rand Media Rishon fow what will be his sixth season at the Israeli champions.
The 35-year-old English is one of the best shooters seen on European courts during the past decade but his career was marred by injuries. The Canadian shooting guard had played for Tenerife during the 2013/14 season as well as for several other Spanish clubs and fellow Basketball Champions League contenders AEK.
The Spanish club turned to the veteran winger after Marius Grigonis picked up an injury that will keep him sidelined until early November and English was already in Spain since he had been training with Bilbao Basket.
The Canadian sharp-shooter was able to join his new team immediately and was registered in time to play in Sunday's Liga Endesa home game against Unicaja Game. English put in an excellent display and finished with 13 points, but Tenerife suffered a narrow 73-72 defeat, their first this season.
Maccabi Rishon meanwhile are delighted that one of the key players in last season's triumphant run to the Israeli Winner League title, as well as to the quarter-finals of the FIBA Europe Cup, is to return to their team. Dawson had averaged 15.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game and delivered superb displays in the post-season to help Maccabi win the championship crown.
The Israeli international spent the pre-season with the New Orleans Pelicans but was released by the NBA franchise last week and decided to re-join the club he had served for the past six years. In order to accommodate Dawson on the roster, Maccabi have decided to terminate their collaboration with guard Joe Jackson.
