Impressive Kataja roll over Kings to put one foot in Regular Season

JOENSUU (Basketball Champions League) – Kataja Basket took on Tuesday a giant step towards the Regular Season of the Basketball Champions League as they will go into the second leg of their Qualification Round 2 tie with Södertälje Kings holding a 39-point advantage after racing to an emphatic 97-58 win over the Swedish champions at home.

The Finnish side jumped to a 12-2 lead within the first four minutes and the gap ballooned to 30-13 midway through the second frame as the Kings converted only five of their first 24 shots from the floor.

Södertälje appeared to be attempting a comeback and reduced to 12 points, 39-27, by half-time but Kataja used a superb 21-8 burst midway through the third frame to increase the lead to 63-39, on a Byron Wesley triple with 3:41 remaining in the period.

Daniel Mullings led five Kataja players in double digits with his 24 points on 8-for-13 shooting and picked up 13 rebounds to register a double-double, while Joey King added 17 points and Wesley finished with 16. The hosts were dominant in all major stats categories but their accuracy from downtown was particularly impressive, as they shot 13-of-24 from three-point range. For Södertälje, Tylor Ongwae had 18 points and eight boards in a losing effort.
